SEO black hat techniques tend to have a negative stigma.  Oh, is that illegal?  Nothing could be further from the truth.  There is nothing illegal about generating positive leads to attract potential consumers to whatever your offer may be.  Some of the time, this can be as innocuous as stuffing a bunch of links on a social networking site so it hits the front page.  Sometimes it’s just about tricking the engine into knocking you up a few ranks on a search.  The bottom line is that there is the potential to reap huge rewards in the way of financial independence from participating in this methodology.

It wasn’t too long ago that many of the SEO black hat techniques and approaches were accepted and utilized by everyone who wanted to make money.  And make money they did.  A lot of money, actually.  Things got a little more sophisticated and companies wanted to ensure that those people clicking on their ads were getting the best possible results.  Ok, well the party was over at least for the white hats.  Because you see everyone was a white hat back then using white hate techniques, there weren’t really any black hat techniques at all.  This is a recent trend of disapproval of methods to subvert the machine as it were.  It is not new though.

What sorts of techniques are in vogue these days?  Well, scraping sites and mashing them on your own domain is one way.  Not back linking to the source is also a real nice way to alienate you too.  But this goes on all the time and people have made a ton of money doing it.  You won’t get much kudos from so called white SEO types or the engine companies them but you will certainly make a lot of money.  And yes.  It is not illegal.

Marketing has always treaded that line though in culture as long as marketing has occurred.  One analogous phenomenon is the infomercial.  Is this really the last offer for this product?  Does this counter really represent the actual number of people calling right now?  We have all seen it before, claims that perilously close to being bogus.  Are these people black hats?  No.  They are doing honest business using accepted and proven methods (and are making money hand over fist).  Just like these folks, so will you if you embrace the dark side just a little for your next marketing campaign or strategy?

The SEO black hat techniques range from scraping as mentioned above, to keyword stuffing, to doorways and cloaking.  Black Hat World has some really great resources that will introduce you easily and gently to these concepts.  They like most things are just a means to an end—try to drive as much traffic and rank as high as you can.  You will see competitors do anything they can include use these techniques to outpace, outsmart, and outsmart you in their attempt to rise to the top of the result pages.  Will you do the same?
