Being able to properly use optimization skills on your web pages doesn’t really require specific SEO training.  I mean, SEO usually falls beneath a marketing department on the org chart and is part of initiatives dedicated to bringing in revenue or really maximizing revenue earning potential.  The same principles can be applied to simple one man projects and can certainly be just as effective as major efforts in a formal company.  The truth is that everyone can benefit from understanding the mechanics of how making money online really works.

Short of going to marketing school or taking formal classes to achieve specialized SEO training the fact really remains that you can find most of what people learn in certification programs and the like online.  The information is all there are your fingertips and there is certainly more information than you could probably ever absorb, it’s just a matter of finding it.  Thankfully there are some resources out there like Black Hat World that do a great part in disseminating information and providing such resources to willing entrepreneurs.  If you are motivated by money and profits, give it a chance.  Don’t let the negative connotation of the name fool you, the types of techniques for subverting search engines have been used for years by people and corporations alike.  They were able to make a huge amount of money by just understanding better than most how a search engine truly works.

SEO training programs or web sites might be able to elucidate some of this information for you but ultimately it’s really up to you over how far you want to go in the world of making money online.  Relying on traditional business concepts and marketing precepts is always a good thing, but there are viral and guerilla methods that go a long way and work very well just because of the medium of the web in general.  Broadening your horizons and embracing the new are critical in succeeding in this new frontier if it is indeed new to you.  You will quickly find that you can do everything by the book and do everything right and still something isn’t working.  I would encourage you to investigate every possible avenue of attack and option.  Only then, after you see the total picture and the total potential of what you are involved in will you begin to grasp the subtleties that can make or break a campaign or initiative to make money.  This goes towards understanding that it will require a lot of sweat equity at first and maybe even a little outlay of capital to get software you need for analytics, but nothing can replace motivation and determination and there are no algorithms or programs that can stand in for that.  If you can bring that to the table and then use the tools to bolster your understanding of the facts before you then you have as good as chance as any.  Really.  You have a better chance than most because they usually give up.
